HELP US PROTECT OUR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION BENEFITS

The homestead exemption is a benefit to Florida residents who own and occupy their property as their permanent residence.  The Florida Constitution has provided Florida residents with this exemption to lessen their tax burden.  In Brevard County, the $25,000 homestead exemption along with the Save Our Homes Amendment saves qualified residents hundreds of dollars per year in taxes.

The penalties for persons benefiting from unqualified exemptions are harsh.  Sections 193.155 (9) and 196.161 of the Florida Statutes specify that owners who do not qualify for a homestead exemption and other exemptions will have a lien placed against their property, and, if applicable, the properties can be back assessed for up to 10 years.  The owners will also be required to pay a considerable penalty of 50% of the unpaid taxes for each year, and pay an interest rate of 15% per year.

It is important to this office that we protect the homestead exemption for all Brevard residents.  Help us secure that benefit by reporting any unqualified homestead exemptions below.

Report Unqualified Homestead Exemptions

If you know of any person that may be benefiting from an unqualified homestead exemption please e-mail us.  Please provide the property address, and a brief description of the reason you believe they are receiving an unqualified homestead exemption.  You are not required to reveal any personal information.
